Digit Review Scam Legit or Necessary?

digit automated savings

Digit is an automated savings service. As always, my first question in a Digit review is, Is Digit a Scam? Then, if Digit is legitimate, the question is what exactly this online financial service does and is Digit worth it for the average person’s personal financial situation. Is Digit safe? I checked out some Digit app reviews and then dug into the details myself. If you are looking for something similar, but that invests the money and doesn’t calculate its own savings (it’s a roundup savings app) check out my Acorns reviews. Is Digit A Scam? The burden of proof for calling something a scam differs based on what exactly it does, and what can be shown from available sources. Digit is a venture capital-backed internet start-up, raising money from, among othe rs, Google’s own venture capital arm. That in itself doesn’t mean it is not a scam, but it does mean that it isn’t some fly-by-night hacker operation looking to steal a few credit card numbers and email addresses. Is Digit Legitimate? Since Digit is a legitimate business and not just a scam to steal your banking information, the question becomes whether Digit is necessary. The idea is that …

WalletHub Review Is It Legit or Scam Free Credit Reports

wallethub reviews

WalletHub reviews are mostly positive, but let’s take a deeper look into exactly who WalletHub is, and what they do. What Is WalletHub? WalletHub is an online financial service that offers personal finance tools for users. The main offering is a daily free credit score, and the related free credit report. After taking a close look, here is my WalletHub review. Is WalletHub Legit, or is WalletHub a scam? In order for a company to pull and use your credit report, and then calculate a credit score, it will need to collect personal identifying information. This is exactly the kind of information you don’t want to be handing off to a scammer, so the first item of business with a company like this is determining if Wallet Hub is legitimate or not. So, the first step of any Wallet Hub review needs to be finding out who they are. WalletHub is an offering by a company called Evolution Finance. The company was founded in 2008, according to Bloomberg, and has been mentioned numerous times in the media. The original product was a credit card comparison website called CardHub. This isn’t a WalletHub scam necessarily. You can still get there if you …

Are Robo-Advisors Worth It?

robo-advisor

Are Robo-Advisors good enough at what they do? As most regular readers of this financial planning blog know, I used to be a professional Certified Financial Planner for several years. That gives me a lot of insight into just what a financial advisor does and does not do for their clients, and how much that is worth. Susie Orman is a former financial planner who decided that the whole profession was basically rubbish. Other former financial advisors are now out there saying that these professionals are indispensable. The truth, as with most things lies somewhere in between. So, how does a robo-advisor stand up to a real financial advisor? Are robo-advisors safe? And, most importantly, are robo-advisors worth it? What Is Robo-Advisor? Let’s start with getting some facts straight. First, robo-advisor is a fancy, sensational term for bold headlines. The reality is that the so-called robo-advisors are just computer programs that build an investment portfolio, usually out of mutual funds and ETFs, for you. There are no robots sitting behind desks anywhere (although that would be cool.) Second, a robo-advisor isn’t an advisor or financial planner so much as an investment manager. Robo-Advisor vs Financial Planner The reason these things …

SoFi Banking Scam or Legit – A SoFi Banking Review

sofi banking

Taking another look at what SoFi offers. This time we are all about SoFi Banking reviews. Is SoFi Banking a Scam? SoFi Banking, including SoFi checking and SoFi savings are products of SoFi Bank, which is a member of FDIC. FDIC membership comes with numerous rules and regulations that are actively policed by several federal regulators. So, we can be quite sure that SoFi is not a scam at least in the stealing your money and disappearing sense. In fact, even if SoFi goes bankrupt, FDIC insurance ensures that you won’t lose a penny, up to $250,000 per account. Is SoFi Banking Legit? So, is SoFi Banking legit? Yes, but like many companies the bold face type, and look here hand waving, hides a few catches to SoFi Banking you might want to keep an eye on. Let’s take a review of SoFi banking and see what it offers. First, SoFi banking offers a very good 1.25% interest rate on your checking and savings deposits. That makes SoFi Checking and SoFi Savings worth having because that is the highest interest rate on savings or checking that you will find that applies to the whole balance. (Lots of banks advertise the …

Acorns Review Automated Investing Made Easy?

acorns app reviews

Note: This Acorns review article has been updated with the latest information as published on the acorns.com website. No sooner than I finished my Digit review, than I saw an ad for another automated savings app on Facebook that takes a different tack for building up your savings automatically with the help of an app and online financial service. This one is called Acorns. Let’s check it out. Is Acorn legit? Is Acorns a scam? Read on while I do my Acorns app review. Acorns Review – Legit, Scam, Worthwhile? Acorns vs Digit Whereas Digit monitors your bank balance and transfers money its algorithm determines is “extra” into a savings account for you, Acorns rounds up the change on every purchase you make to the next whole dollar amount and automatically saves that money for you. Another version of this type of automatic investing and savings app is Grifin. Grifin does away the clever sounding “round up to the next dollar.” Grifin is a user-controlled automatic app investing. Instead of gathering up a few dollars’ worth of transfers and sending them down into mutual fund land, Grifin take every transaction you make and invests $1 in the stock you just bought something …

Wealthfront Review: Safe, Scam, or Legit?

wealthfront reviews

I keep getting questions about the pros and cons of Wealthfront, probably because they are advertising pretty heavily on Facebook and other platforms. So, it’s time for a Wealthfront review. The most important thing is to make sure Wealthfront is legit. It is SIPC insured (that’s like FDIC insurance for brokerages) so it at least has to be a real financial organization. Of course, that doesn’t mean that Wealthfront has good investment advice or good service advice, but it does mean that if they go under all of the sudden, then Wealthfront is safe insofar as your money is insured. Wealthfront reviews agree that Wealthfront is not a scam. Wealthfront Fees Wealthfront’s trademark is “Self-Driving Money.” It’s value proposition is that it will take care of your money, and manage it for you. Wealthfront is a robo-advisor, and one of the mini-investor platforms. Wealthfront fees are low. The main Wealthfront fee is the advisory fee of 0.25% on the amount deposited with Wealthfront. Of course, like any other wealth app, or brokerage, the investments Wealthfront uses have their own expenses. According to the company, the funds Wealthfront uses charge between 0.06% and 0.13%, which are very low fees for mutual …

Quizzle Scam or Legit?

Quizzle Scam graphic

I’ve gotten several requests for a Quizzle review. Quizzle is an online financial service that offers, according to the bold face type, a free credit report, free credit score and various financial tools. Whenever someone points me in the direction of a personal finance company like this the first thing I check is if I can sniff out a scam. Often, you can spot the scam coming before you even see the fine print. Obviously, if something isn’t on the up and up, then there is no reason to waste any time on a review. So, is Quizzle legitimate, or is this all a big con job? Quick Quizzle Review The biggest red flag for the various free credit score or free credit report offers floating around out there is to look for the words “free trial.” Typically, the way the free credit score scam works is that a financial company (including all three major credit bureaus) offer you a free report in big, bold type and in smaller type, lower down on the page, inform you that it isn’t actually free at all. Instead, you are being offered an automatically renewing trial membership in a credit monitoring program that …

Zillow Can Keep Zestimating

are zillow zestimates accurate

If you have had even an inkling of interest in real estate in the last few years, you have probably heard of Zillow, the online real estate website. It’s one of many online financial services shaking up the game like the Acorns savings app, or the Digit app. Zillow built its audience on the concept of a Zestimate, and online, computer-based algorithm that provides an estimate of the value of your home. People love seeing what their house is “worth” today, this month, and over time. The Zestimate is updated as often as the algorithm gets new data. Are Zestimates Real Estimates? Zillow has had to fight off people from the real estate industry who don’t like the company giving people ideas that makes it harder to earn that real estate commission. Sometimes, it makes people think their house is worth too much, and sometimes it makes people think the house they want to buy is overpriced. Either way, that is a headache for realtors and real estate agents. According to a recent lawsuit, it also caused problems for home builders who accused Zillow of hurting their ability to get the proper sale price for their homes by publishing Zestimates …

Credit Sesame Safe, Scam or Legit?

Credit Sesame is another online financial utility that lets you check “your credit score for free.” Of course, there are always more than a few caveats with these kinds of websites. So, let’s take a look at CreditSesame.com and see how it stands up. Credit Sesame Review Any reviews of Credit Sesame need to start with how much does Credit Sesame cost, and is Credit Sesame legit, or is it an online scam? One catch comes during the signup process where you are asked to “do more” with your credit score by adding “goals”. Some clicks there and you’ll get targeted ads, and maybe more. There isn’t a way to skip this step, so choose something you don’t mind hearing about, and as always use your “store email” or “email list” email address. (You should have a separate email address that you never use for anything “real” that helps avoid hacking attempts and keeps your real inbox clean. If you don’t have one, get a free email from Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, or other service before signing up.) I chose rewards cards when I signed up and the first thing at the very top of my screen every time I log in is …
